Project Manager Jessie Guilfoy joined Siena in 2024, bringing nearly two decades of related construction and facilities management experience. Previously as a Senior Construction Manager, Jessie oversaw planning, execution, and delivery of capital projects for a life science research firm in Cambridge. We recently asked Jessie to share some of her work/life experiences and how she applies knowledge, skill, and her friendly personality to her work. Thanks for everything you do for Siena, Jessie!

What was your first job ever, and what did you learn?

My first job was lifeguarding at the YMCA, which secretly included teaching swim lessons. Great experience — and the moment I realized my future career would not be working with children.

How did you choose construction as a career path?

Construction chose me. I started my career working in a chemistry lab at a life sciences research facility. After a co-worker’s lab incident that prompted a broader safety review, I reconnected with a former manager who had transitioned into Facilities. I shared that I was looking to move beyond lab work, and she encouraged me to explore a role in projects. A few weeks later, I joined the Facilities team. I ended up loving it. The rest is history.

What’s the most memorable project you worked on? What made it special/unique? What did you learn?

My most memorable project was also the most challenging of my career — and a valuable learning experience. At my previous job there was an MEP-heavy project involving the installation of four ducted BSCs with cell sorters for a Flow Cytometry lab, all while the end user hoped to keep the lab fully operational. Looking back, the initial schedule wasn’t realistic, and I learned a lot about setting expectations, aligning project goals with operational realities, advocating for your point of view, and trusting my instincts early on. The lab ultimately had to shut down, and the project finished over schedule and budget—but it fundamentally shaped how I approach project management today.

What’s something people outside the industry often misunderstand about construction?

A lot of people think construction is just pointing, giving directions, and watching things get built. The reality is it’s a nonstop mix of planning, problem-solving, coordination, and managing expectations — because every project comes with plenty of opinions and surprises.

What do you like best about Siena?

I could say everything – and I mean that — but the best part of Siena is definitely the people and the genuinely supportive leadership. From day one, everyone made me feel welcome and part of the Siena family. Each person brings their own personality and strengths to the team, and leadership encourages us to be ourselves. It makes for a fun culture!

What’s one thing on your desk that says a lot about you?

Fidget toys — stress relief, focus tool, and proof that my brain is constantly going.

What’s a small thing that instantly makes your workday better?

Laughing with everyone or a silly dad joke.

What’s a skill you developed outside of work that helps you with your job today?

Parenting. It has given me much more patience than I had before.

Work-life balance is important in our demanding industry. How do you enjoy your spare time?

Spare time is non-existent right now — but I make it a point to get out with my girlfriends once a month to stay sane. If that doesn’t happen, two microwaved chocolate chip cookies, whatever ice cream the kids didn’t finish, and a good show works, too. It’s my solid self-care routine!
